The benefits of journaling are far beyond what words can explain but I will try my best to give you an idea of how it can be life changing for you. Journaling has been a very important aspect of my life. As early as I can remember, I always had the desire to write how I feel instead of expressing my feelings aloud. This is partially due to living in the type of household that firmly believed that children are best seen and not heard and if I even thought about expressing how I felt it could possibly be seen as back talk which would result in discipline.
I’m sure many can relate. Anyway, I never saw trying to verbally express the way I felt was worth the risk so I stuck to writing. When I was angry I would write. When I felt lonely I would write. When I was hurt I would write. Journaling became my choice of therapy through my teenage and younger years but as I got older and was able to do as I please I let that aspect of my life fall in the background and turned to other harmful outlets for therapy.
However, all glory to God, as I began to get my spiritual life back in order I was reminded of how beneficial journaling was to my life. And since it is currently mental health month I figured now would be the perfect time to share this therapeutic activity I love with others who are looking for a healthy way to manage their mental health. The act of handwriting activates large regions in the brain that are responsible for thinking, language, healing and working memory.
A few other mental health benefits of journaling are:
- Allowing yourself time to self reflect
- Relieves stress, pent- up feelings, and negative thoughts
- Keep your thoughts organized
- Improves your memory
- Sparks creativity
- Improves your writing
- Forces you to step away from your busy life, slow down, and process your thoughts and feelings
I can honestly say that I have experienced all the benefits of journaling and now in order to help others start taking advantage of these benefits, I will be providing journal prompts along with the articles I share. In doing this, I am hoping to assist those who want to start journaling or those who are getting back into journaling but don’t know where to start or what to write about. Each prompt will be spiritually based and can be used for your faith journal so I will refer to them as faith journal prompts. You are more than welcome to share a portion or all of what you write in your journal in the comments or hashtag pictures of you journaling in unique places at #iWKWFaithJournaling. My personal favorite place is the beach but since I don’t live by one I settle for the lake. 😆
We are going to kick off this journal prompt journey with a prompt that relates to the recent article I wrote about Friendship Management.
